Taking care of your eyes is important at every age, which is why we recommend periodic checkups for everyone. It’s recommended that children have their eyes checked by the time he or she is 6 months old, again at 3 years old and then before the beginning of kindergarten. After that, we typically recommend visits every 2 years, but this can vary depending on your child’s eye health and individual needs. As skilled providers of care, we perform an age-appropriate visual acuity test. If your child is not yet able to identify letters this portion of the exam may involve having your little one identify pictures on an eye chart. We also examine the anatomy of your child’s eye to diagnose if refractive errors, amblyopia or other conditions affecting your child’s eye health and vision are present.
For adults, it’s important to keep in mind that around the age of 40, many people begin to notice changes in their vision, particularly when it comes to viewing objects up close. Presbyopia, which is a form of nearsightedness, becomes increasingly common with age. Presbyopia can be corrected with reading glasses, bifocals or progressive lenses. Aging also increases the risk of harmful conditions such as cataracts, glaucoma and macular degeneration that if left untreated lead to significant vision loss. Early detection and intervention is the key for the effective management and treatment of many age-related eye conditions. A baseline comprehensive eye exam at 40 years of age, and as recommended thereafter is essential for preserving and protecting your eyesight for years to come.
