Experiencing our favorite movies, shows, games and sports on a big screen TV has become the norm for many of us. Those big screens are nearly ubiquitous in every restaurant, bar, store and waiting room nowadays. As enjoyable as it may be to experience those large, sharp images, our optometrist at Palisade Eye wants you to consider these suggestions to ensure you’re also protecting your vision.
Besides the excitement of the immersive viewing experience, larger screens also have the potential to reduce eye strain for those with vision problems like nearsightedness.
But if the availability of all that content leads to prolonged screen time, that can lead to eye strain, headaches, and dry eyes. If the TV is positioned incorrectly or if the room is poorly lit, this can also contribute to eye strain and put too much pressure on your neck muscles.
These high-tech, high-definition TVs emit blue light, which can potentially contribute to eye fatigue and has even been linked to disrupting sleep patterns. It’s advisable to limit or eliminate watching TV before going to bed.
Some suggestions for safe and eye-friendly viewing include making sure you’re sitting an adequate distance from the screen, which differs depending on the size of the screen and manufacturer; mounting the TV at eye level to prevent eye and neck strain; adjust the TV’s brightness and contrast settings to comfortable levels; and using adequate ambient light in the TV room.
It’s recommended to take 20- to 30-minute breaks from watching your TV, and getting up and moving away from the screen for a few minutes. This also goes for other devices including smartphones, tablets and computers.
The best way to protect your vision is to have a regular eye examination with our optometrist at Palisade Eye. Our expert, friendly, attentive staff will ensure you’re seeing and looking your best with a full line of the latest eyewear. Please contact us for an appointment today!
